Discourse is for support forums. Forumera is for stories.
Discourse is a great forum engine for tech communities, customer support, and Q&A. Play-by-post is a different shape, and the missing parts are character threads, canon, and pacing built for fiction.
What is awkward about Discourse for an RPG
Discourse treats every topic the same way: question, replies, solution. Great for stack-overflow-style discussion. Less great for a story where there is no "solution", just a scene with characters who continue into the next thread.
You can bend it into shape with custom categories and plugins, but you spend your evenings configuring Discourse instead of writing posts. And the AI features that fit play-by-post (recaps, character continuity, in-narrative drafting) are not the kind of plugin community Discourse has.
Where Discourse wins
- Mature, battle-tested forum engine with a huge plugin ecosystem.
- Self-hosting is supported and well-documented.
- Powerful moderation and trust-level system for large public communities.
Where Forumera wins for play-by-post
- Built-in concepts for character boards and character threads.
- AI features designed for fiction: in-narrative recaps, character continuity, board-level "what is happening here" summaries.
- Zero infrastructure. Subdomain in 30 seconds, no server to maintain.
Side by side for play-by-post
| For your campaign | Forumera | Discourse |
|---|---|---|
| Scene-shaped threads | Threads with canon summaries, in-narrative recaps, resolved/unresolved state. | Topics with solutions. Plugin-shaped, not story-shaped. |
| Character threads | Mark a board as a character board. Each thread = one character with AI tools. | Convention-only. No platform support. |
| Async pacing | Catch-up panels and per-user "since last visit" are first-class. | Read state exists. Catch-up summaries do not. |
| SEO | Per-thread canonical URLs, structured data, public/private read access. | Strong SEO with effort, depends on instance config. |
| AI for storytelling | Character recap, character update, board recap, post drafting. | Generic AI plugins, not RPG-specific. |
| Hosting | Hosted by us. You own the data, export any time. | Self-host or pay for managed. Both more work. |
Pick the tool shaped like your problem
If you are running a developer Q&A, a customer support forum, or a knowledge base, Discourse is probably the right answer. It is the best general-purpose forum engine.
If you are running a play-by-post campaign, you want a tool that already knows what a character thread is, what a scene canon is, and how to summarize a board in narrative voice. Forumera does. Discourse is a powerful engine you would have to teach.
