Messages & notifications

Forumera separates public discussion in threads from private communication in messages, while keeping you notified about important activity across both.

Direct messages

Direct messages let you have one-to-one or small-group conversations outside of public boards and threads.

Common uses:

  • Coordinating with co-moderators or admins.
  • Giving private feedback.
  • Following up on a thread without derailing the main discussion.

You can access your messages from the messages area in the app navigation. Conversations are listed with the most recent activity at the top.

Invites inbox

Forums can send you invites:

  • To join a new forum.
  • To access a private board or area.
  • To take on a new role.

Invites are collected in a dedicated invites view under messages, where you can accept or decline them. Accepting an invite may immediately change what content you can see across the app.

Notifications

Notifications keep you updated on important events, such as:

  • Someone replying to your thread or post.
  • Being mentioned or referenced.
  • Receiving a new invite.

Notifications are usually surfaced in the UI as an icon with a badge, and may also be summarised in other parts of the app. The exact behaviour can be tuned by the forum or platform over time.

Staying focused

To avoid notification overload:

  • Watch only the forums and boards that are relevant to you.
  • Skim thread titles before subscribing or replying.
  • Use search to find information instead of expecting to see everything in your feed.

Notification preferences

Most members tune their notifications once when they join and never touch them again, so the defaults matter. From your account settings you can usually adjust:

  • What triggers a notification. Replies to your own thread are usually on. Mentions are usually on. New posts on watched threads are configurable.
  • How you get notified. In-app badge, email digest, or both. Mobile push exists where the browser supports it.
  • How often you get email summaries. Immediate, daily digest, or off entirely. Daily digest is the sweet spot for most people.

If a forum is sending you more notifications than you want, the answer is almost always in this menu, not in the forum's own settings.

Muting threads and members

Sometimes a single thread becomes noisy in a way that does not match your interest. You can usually mute a thread directly from its menu, which stops it from generating notifications without removing it from search or browsing.

You can also mute another member if their posts are persistently unhelpful to you. Muting hides their content for you specifically and is silent — they are not notified. For situations where a member is breaking forum rules, reporting them to moderators is the right action, not muting.
